Next Black

It’s usually cold come Halloween, but this year’s unseasonably warm autumn means that today is much warmer than it should be this time of year. So much so that I’ve switched out my usual knitted black dress that has been the anchor of my witch costume in previous years and replaced it with a lighter, shorter sleeved dress. I told you on Wednesday that I am obsessed with this dress!

Of course I had to keep the striped socks and the hat that means I can’t get through doorways as I’m too tall. Happy Halloween y’all!

Outfit: Autumn Personified

Steve Madden Candence cognac

This outfit just screams autumn to me. The brown, the burgundy, the hint of orange on the sweater, the boots, the scarf. And I love it all.

Wednesday morning was the perfect fall morning. It was crisp, see-your-breath-4ºC-at-7am-as-opposed-to-15ºC-the-day-before cold, and sunny. I still haven’t pulled out my winter coats (see 15ºC at 7am on Tuesday morning and Friday’s forecast of 19ºC which is making me rethink my Halloween costume plans) so I felt it warranted a proper knitted scarf and I added my leather jacket as an extra layer. You may remember that this jacket was an eBay bargain last year – it was almost new and I paid just 25% of the retail price for it, finally fulfilling my dream of owning an Long Tall Sally leather jacket.

Brown leather jacket – Long Tall Sally (eBay)
Brown polo neck sweater – Long Tall Sally (eBay)
Burgundy jeans – Dorothy Perkins Tall
Tan boots – Steve Madden (c/o Sarenza)
Wooden heart necklace – Scope
Cream scarf – Next Tall (free with a dress)

Outfit: Obsessed With This Dress

27-10-14

27-10-14e

Georgia Rose red booties

I am obsessed with this dress right now. Two weekends ago I wore it two days running and I would have worn it Sunday too had I not been with the same people and felt it a bit skanky to wear the same dress three days in a row. I don’t even know why I like it so much. I mean, it’s black, it’s shapeless and it wrinkles REALLY easily: three things I would usually steer clear of. But I can’t stop wearing it. On the plus side it’s heavy enough that the wrinkles will pretty much drop out if it’s hung up overnight but the lack of shape makes it completely alien to my usual style. Oh the versatility though. I am loving it at the moment with coloured tights and ankle boots, but come the cold weather I can see it with coloured polo necks underneath it and higher boots.

Anyway, this is what I wore on Monday. I bought a proper poppy pin brooch again this year as I manage to lose a paper poppy after about 5 minutes. The amount of times I have set out to church on Remembrance Sunday with a poppy pinned to my coat and by the time I’ve got there there’s just an empty pin: well, it happens a lot. So last year I bought a pin brooch and didn’t lose it so it seemed like a good idea again this year.

Outfit: Harking Back to Friday

24-10-14b

24-10-14d

Priceless lilac-pink

Happy Monday y’all! Did everyone have a good weekend? This is my outfit from Friday, which of course involved jeans. There’s no point having casual Friday and not wearing jeans.

24-10-14

I just went for a simple jeans and sweater combo this past Friday – it’s comfy, functional and easy. The details such as the floral front on the sweater and the cute purple boots helped to amp up the look a little.

Jeans – Long Tall Sally
Purple booties – Priceless Shoes
Black leather belt – Pieces (c/o Sarenza)

This Week...

I am a big fan of Radio 2. I started listening to it when I was about 19 and fed up of the rubbish they played on Radio 1 (yes I am aware I sound like my dad now...) and the adverts on the commercial stations. It’s pretty much the only station I listen to now (other than BBC Radio Leeds when it snows. Radio Leeds in the snow is awesome – they get a bit silly. One time they played a game called How Deep Is Your Snow, where listeners were encouraged to measure the depth of the snow in their garden with whatever they had to hand - a string of frozen sausages, a fork, a small child - and phone in with the result).  I generally listen to it during the day: in the car on my commute and in the kitchen whilst cooking tea and at weekends. However, the one evening show I will make the effort to listen to (on iPlayer if necessary) is The Music Goes Round on a Friday night. Each week there is a theme and all the music played is based around this theme. This leads to some absolute gems being played, songs you wouldn’t usually hear on the radio these days. For example, the last episode I listened to had the theme of water and the music included Carly Simon’s Let The River Run, Andy Williams’s Moon River and a version of The Water Is Wide. Truly eclectic and truly brilliant.

Outfit: Polo Neck and Jacket

Matalan cream black quilt MJs

With a dip in the outside temperatures this week, out have come the polo necks (albeit my thinnest ones). This is the second time this week I’ve worn this top and it is handily covering the burn mark on my neck at present (curling wands are dangerous people, use them with caution!).

This jacket was sent to me by the lovely people at TM Lewin. I love the wintery colour of the deep red, and the faux leather binding on the edges and cuffs adds a touch of class to it I think. The lining is a gorgeous dark red and has roses woven into it. I know you can’t see that when the garment is being worn, but I do like a nice lining in a jacket. The jacket fastens at the front with hook and eye closures. It is part of TM Lewin’s A/W womenswear collection and can be bought here. It’s currently in the sale too!

Red and black jacket – c/o TM Lewin
Black polo neck sweater – Long Tall Sally
Black trousers – Next Tall
Cream and black shoes – Matalan (sale)
Red beads – eBay
Cream earrings – gifted

Outfit: The First Knit Dress

20-10-14

20-10-14e

20-10-14f

Steve Madden Candence cognac

It’s a bit of a cheat calling Monday’s outfit the first knit dress really, as this particular dress has been in my closet all summer. It’s a knit, but a cotton knit so it’s ideal for a chillier summer day as well as working with layers the rest of the year. I do love a good knit dress and there are a few options in my wardrobe now since I switched out my autumn/winter items a couple of weekends ago.

I feel as though boot season is well and truly upon us now, despite the warmer temperatures this past weekend. (Was it glorious where you were? I was in the south west and 18ºC anyone?) This week is cooler and wet so boots are definitely the thing.

Beige knit dress – Bay Trading (sale)
Black leggings – New Look Tall
Tan boots – Steve Madden (c/o Sarenza)
Earrings – Ethel Austin
Necklace – gifted
Black belt – free with a top

My favourite colour right now is burgundy. It just has such an autumnal vibe about it, don’t you think? This was Wednesday’s outfit.

I am still trying to figure out what to do with my hair now that it is shorter. My favourite search on You Tube this week is ‘short hair tutorial’. Tuesday night I washed my hair and I was going to blow dry and straighten it to see what that looked like, but then I decided to just let it air dry instead. I put a bit of gel wax through it once it was semi dry, then rolled it up into a messy bun on top of my head. The results this morning were what you see here. I added a little more gel wax but I think I need to try a different product as by the time I’d driven to work the curls had dropped and looked a bit fluffy. I’ll get there with it.

This Week...

I don’t follow many group pages on Facebook, other than those belonging to fellow bloggers. One page I do follow though is Leeds Back in the Day and it has become one of my favourites. Members of the group can post old photos of Leeds, well, back in the day, and it’s fascinating. There are loads of black and white photos, but my favourite ones are those from the 1980s or early 1990s, times that I can remember but showing buildings and shops that I have forgotten about. It’s also a useful place to learn a little history of Leeds. If you are from the Yorkshire area, or have spent any time here in the past, check it out.

Outfit: Afternoon Tea

13-10-14

13-10-14e

Jana Rahbini black ankle boot

Monday was my sister’s birthday so we both took the day off work and went out for afternoon tea to celebrate. It’s National Chocolate Week this week (apparently) so the afternoon tea was chocolate themed, meaning that all the cakes and pastries were chocolate. It was super delicious!

13-10-14d

So I finally got my hair cut on Friday. There was an offer for a free haircut in last month’s In Style magazine sponsored by The Hair Group so I went to a salon I’ve never been to before which was my nearest one where the offer was valid. It was a really good experience and I especially liked how the hair washing chairs had a bit that flicked up to rest your legs on so it was more comfortable leaning back over the sink.

13-10-14c

Anyway, I’m loving my new length! I think it looks better with a bit of a wave in it although I used my Spin Curl dryer on it Sunday night and I don’t think it worked as well as it did when my hair was longer. It might have to be my curling wand from here on in. However, I am yet to experiment with styling it straight myself so that might turn out OK too.

13-10-14b

Finally, can you tell I am loving this hat this autumn? It was cold and rainy on Monday so a hat was definitely the way forward and for some reason I’m favouring this one this year.

Denim skirt – Jasper Conran (Debenhams, sale)
