Well, I did not expect to be applying sunscreen on October 1st. The heatwave in the UK continues and it was another hot sunny day today. I met my sister in Bradford as we were booked in to see This Is Cinerama at the Pictureville Cinema at the National Media Museum. (I didn’t know the weather was going to do this when I booked it!) I have wanted to see This is Cinerama for years, ever since I first read about it in Bill Bryson’s Notes From A Small Island. It was made in 1952 as a promotional film to show what the new medium of Cinerama could do. If you don’t know, Cinerama is a film format shown on a super-wide screen, and filmed with 3 cameras to give a panoramic view of the action. The sound is also more real than in an ordinary cinema – for example, if someone is standing on the right hand side of the screen, you will hear them talking from the right of the cinema. The film featured excerpts from the opera Aida and the camera remained still but you could see the whole of the stage. There was a sequence with the camera on the front of a rollercoaster and it felt like you were actually on the ride, that you were moving up and down. The second half of the film (after the intermission – I love it!) was a waterskiing display from the Cypress Gardens Park in Florida, and then a plane ride across the USA, focussing on various landmarks – lower Manhattan, the Rockies, Mount Rushmore and flying inside the Grand Canyon. We thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it if you happen to be in Bradford on the first Saturday of a month.

After the film, we went to get Subway sandwiches for lunch and sat in the sunshine in Centenary Square. Then we had a wander around the city centre. It is years since I had been to Bradford and although there is still a lot of development work to be done (a Westfield shopping centre is due to be built at some point) it was nice to be in a different city.

I got home to find the young man fast asleep on the sofa. He’d BBQed some sausages earlier in the afternoon so I made some pasta for my tea. We’re now chilling out watching X Factor.
